Dwellings Builds Modern Family Bungalow at Mesta Park
Built in 2008 by the Oklahoma City-based company Dwellings LLC, the Modern Family Bungalow at 516 NW 21st was intentionally built to blend in amongst the charming, century-old homes on the tree-lined streets of historic Mesta Park. It was also built 100% new, from the ground up, on an infill lot that had sat vacant for more than 10 years.
The home has been featured in local media more than any other single “green” residence since being awarded the state’s first gold-level LEED certification. Applying innovative principles and methods to traditional materials, Dwellings was able to keep costs down AND engage newcomers with key principles of the green movement. Dormers in the 20ft ceilings provide ample light for most of the home during the day. Insulated foundation, windows, and walls (spray foam insulation on entire “shell”) keep the weather outside where it belongs, and keep monthly energy bills remarkably low. Solid bamboo and soy-based stains provide fashionable flooring throughout. The home also showcases low-flow faucets and commodes, Energy-star appliances, low VOC paints, and ultra hi-efficiency HVAC. Outdoors, the professional landscaping intentionally requires little-to-no maintenance, due to the choice of regional plants, saving money and making the earth happier too. In addition to Dwellings’ Modern Family Bungalow being LEED Gold-certified, it also has Energy Star certification and the EPA’s Clean Air certification as well.
